A thief in the night…

… Steals three tors whilst the world sleeps.

Away from work early as I can today and I take the opportunity to sneak out on the moor. It’s dark and drizzling but stunning, we drive through ever smaller lanes into the parish of Lustleigh. Climbing from the road along the bridleway is like walking through a land of boulders. The green mounds refract the sound of our movement and shatter it into an army of imagined creatures slithering in the dark, just out of sight. Harton’s chest follows Sharpitor now that we have climbed onto the ridge, forest gives way to clear space, clear space turns to woods. By the time we get to, (and find!), Raven’s tor it’s raining and  time to head home.

We retrace our steps to the car, slipping and sliding down the ever-wetter rocks whilst admiring the lights of the distant towns.

Three more tors and a brilliant night stolen back from the normal weeknight routine of marking and preparation, roll on the next trip!

Walking the Black Dog – Bottor Rock, Sharpitor Rock.

So, I’m in one of those dark moods we occasionally suffer from – a “black dog day” as Dr Johnson would have put it, interestingly the phrase has been used since Celtic times to describe something dark, threatening, sinister, overwhelming. In medieval period it was linked to the word melancholy.
Well, for some reason, no, for no good reason at all, I am raging and there is only one cure – hard work…

When it snows, ain’t it thrilling…

Though your nose gets a chilling
We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland…

After days of snow blocking access to the moor, at least for my little car, we hit a clear day.
Driving over past Haytor, we cruise along relatively clear roads and where I got stuck only a few days ago there are lots of little cars parked up, their families sledging and making the most of boxing day. The sky is clear up here and we look down on the mist-shrouded world below, I say we, because I am joined on this walk by my sister Lizzie as well as Einstein and it’s nice to have the company.

Over the moor many of the roads are still blocked and inaccessible but our way is clear to the car park in Widecombe in the moor, we park up and hit the hills…

On Tor with Ben…

After a few weeks of walking on my own, it was great to go walking with Conrad on Saturday and with Ben who took me up on my offer on Sunday!

We agree to do a longer rather than shorter route and so it’s 8am when I pick up Ben on my way to Smeardon Down, just to the east northeast of Peter Tavy. As he leaps into the car a huge mug of coffee is thrust into my hands – this is going to be a good day!
